Make Spaghetti Sauce Low Sodium for a Better Version
This low sodium spaghetti sauce recipe is a simple meal to make without the salt. I’m all about making recipes low sodium when I can. Low sodium cooking does NOT have to be bland, boring, or flavorless… It’s quite the opposite when done right. By building meals around fresh ingredients and bright flavorful spices you can make healthier meals for you and your family. Check outall my low sodium recipes here that are on The Herbeevore. When we say ‘low sodium’ we mean that overall this recipe does not add extra salt or sodium from preservatives. Only you and your doctor know the exact amount of sodium that you should consume, so be sure that you are aligned with a medical professional. Also, our ingredients may differ from yours, so please double check all labels before consuming (especially canned tomatoes!) … and this recipe can be a great addition to your happy low sodium lifestyle.
Cooking with Wine
I also love the sweet and complex flavor of a white wine in this low sodium pasta sauce recipe. I like a dry white wine like Pinot Grigio but if you have anything else in hand it will do!
If you don’t want to add wine to this recipe, adding a little extra balsamic vinegar instead is a nice addition to this delicious sauce.
What’s In This Low Sodium Spaghetti Sauce Recipe?
I love shopping for fresh produce through Misfits Market. They sell fresh groceries, pantry staples, and fantastic food finds (& great low sodium options) at a discount. Choose what goes into the box, get $10 off your first order, and save time with delivery to your door.
- Diced Tomatoes: I only use nosalt added diced tomatoes, these boxed tomatoesare really great to stock up on! These tomatoes have just 10 mg of sodium per serving. Or use fresh tomatoes (with 1/2 can of tomato paste) if they are in season!
- Olive Oil:I like to usethis fruity Zoe olive oilwhich has a fantastic flavor and deep color-it’s really inexpensive online here,so I keep a few liters stocked up in my pantry. For thequality of oil you get, it’s an excellent value,I would highly recommend!
- Garlic: I use fresh garlic when I have it, andthis great jarred organic garlicwhen I don’t have fresh. It’s actually super convenient to havepre-chopped garlic on handfor quick and easy meal prep.
- White Wine
- Italian Seasoning
- Balsamic Vinegar – I like to add balsamic for a little sweetness and flavor. You can also use red wine vinegar – both have 0 mg sodium.
- Fresh Basil or fresh herbs
- BlackPepper:It’s amazing the flavor difference you can get with really goodtellicherry black pepper. Amazon hasa generic brand tellicherry peppercornwhich is the same price is buying pre-ground, and has a million times more flavor… so I use these really greattellicherrypeppercorns, which I would definitely recommend.
Other Optional Add-Ins
- This homemade spaghetti sauce is a great meatless dinner using just tomatoes, but you can add in some lean ground beef, if desired.
- For a spicier sauce, add red pepper flakes or a pinch of Cayenne pepper.
- Sliced bell peppers are a great addition.
- I sometimes add in mushrooms or fresh spinach to the sauce to pack some extra veggies in there.
How To Make No Salt Added Spaghetti Sauce Recipe
1. Finely chop the garlic, and julienne the basil. Set aside.
2. In a large saucepan, add the olive oil and begin by sautéing the garlic over medium heat. Once it gets lightly brown and sauté for 3 minutes until the leaves are wilted slightly.
3. Add the can of tomatoes, juice and all. Also add the white wine and the basil. Stir until all ingredients are mixed and simmer in low for 25 minutes!
4. One little trick I did was about 15 minutes in to cooking. I added half of the tomatoes into my Vitamix and blended the tomatoes for a bit to give it a smoother texture. Then added it back to the pan!
Toss with freshly cooked pasta, and enjoy! Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Low Sodium Recipes
Consult with your doctor or a medical professional to decide how much sodium is right for you. And always check the labels on your food before cooking, especially canned items like tomatoes! Just because something is labeled as “low sodium” does not always mean that it fits in with your dietary needs.
